5e Caravan Magus


5e Shifter Caravan Magus

This is based on a character I made a while ago for 4e and never got to play for very long. I'm assuming +1 spell acquired in adventuring each level on top of automatic gains for leveling.





Meesha was a member of a semi-nomadic family of close knit shifters that traveled, hunted and sold their kills and pieces of craft to the towns they passed. In some cases they sold their services as huntsmen and caravan guards, but for the most part they were traveling hunters and crafters as stated. In one town, as a child, Meesha was with her mother on an errand to sell some objects when, to her wonder she saw a wizard giving a performance in the town square. Meesha hung on as her mother walked off and stayed to watch the entire performance with the rest of the village children clapping right along with them at each illusion and cantrip.

When her mother and family finally found her, they were reasonably more than a little upset at her having "wandered off" (or at least not followed her mother) and soon she was back on the road. But now she had a goal in mind, and one they could not dissuade her from. She worked to save as much money as she could in order to take an entrance test at an academy of magic she knew of along their normal path. She passed the test with flying colors, but the Humans and Eladrin that largely ran the academy refused to let her in, partially on a financial issue, but mostly because of the fear of the shifter girl polluting their bloodlines.

She was going back to her family, bereft of her goal, when a half-elven wizard stopped her in order to offer to teach her as he was impressed with her potential.

With her apprenticeship done now, she is wandering out into the world and had planned to rejoin her family and use her magic to aid them in their life. Unfortunately, when she caught up with her family it was in the husk of a burned out village, her clan's wagons in the debris and her family's ashes mixed with the residents'.

Despite the name Canidae, Meesha does not fit the bill for one of the large, powerfully built shifters descended from the heavier and more danger were-creatures like wolves, bears and tigers. In fact her brothers used to refer to her as the family house cat, in no small part to get a rise out of her. Her wizard-master caught on to the sensitivity as well and used to refer to her as a little rat if she wasn't behaving. Now that she's grown, she's still smaller than a lot of the longtooths, but despite her tendency to groom herself to be more "wolfish" she remains with no more distinction to one species or another than any other razorclaw shifter. She stands about 5'6" at a very slender 128 lbs, and she keeps herself more carefully groomed (from a "civilized" point of view) than most shifters.

Reasoning: Meesha primarily researched magic in order to be a better asset to her caravan. She does not have the normal attitude of an adventurer. She mostly focuses on divination and daily useful stuff while picking up more combat-oriented stuff along the way. A lot of her magic is also ritual-based.

Reasoning:  She still doesn't have a lot of the normal bread and butter wizard spells. This character would primarily be focused at identifying problems well in advance of encountering them and giving the party the ability to plan for situations. And that is very, very powerful...if you haven't had a divination/sensory specialist in a game before.

Reasoning: To be honest, given the wizard tendency to accumulate spells and how common some spells are, she'd be likely to have a LOT more spells than this by this level and a lot of these spells would have been learned MUCH earlier. But you can't really predict the direction of a game, so I focused the level-up spells on concept and made semi-random selections for the scribed spells. (by which I mean that I skimmed the combat stuff and said "that looks interesting")
